Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F (2024).

Hot on the heels of Top Gun: Maverick (2022), here’s another inevitable remake/reboot/belated sequel. Because these are for the most part guaranteed cash cows, you can understand the need for the movie bankers to hedge their bets and continue to pump out ‘distinguished IP’ movies or whatever they’re called – recognised characters and milieus.

Beverly Hills Cop (1984) is a wonderful motion picture of its time and still holds up – funny, thrilling, violent, smart enough, and with a protagonist who would entertain in any 90-minute premise. The sequel is a less good carbon copy but still serviceable and with the added bonus of Brigitte Nielsen yelling at folk to “eat the floor!”. Let’s not discuss the third one in the canon, as it does not exist, much akin to Rocky V (1990).

And here we arrive at Axel F (2024).

It’s not bad at all; moreover, it’s funny. The best part? It isn’t a PG-13.

Happy times with Eddie.

This is either going to be absolute shite or okay, i.e., tolerable for nostalgia reasons, on a level of not being shite. Either way, they really need to stop making these things and just create something approaching brave material. Leave good movies alone, stop fiddling with them, cease from converting their original intent into a contemporary, i.e., pathetic, cultural minefield of human beings identifying as staplers.

But it’s going to get way worse before the baloney ends.

Fucking cretins.

The Nutty Professor (1996).

I saw this so many times back in the day, but like Ghostbusters (1984), I only understood the simple gags and was oblivious to the allusions to an adult world; that, and I didn’t get the actual words the characters were saying because of my limited vocabulary.

It’s incredibly funny, and for a PG-13/12 certificate, quite shocking in the things it gets away with. It exists in that vast wilderness of terrible Eddie Murphy movies stretching 20 years to Dreamgirls (2006), as the only gem of the lot. Maybe he just couldn’t be bothered or genuinely thought he was picking the right material.

The sequel to this was inevitable. I’ve not seen it. The reviews were enough to put me off.
